What Is a Spring Detox and Why Does It Matter?

A spring detox is a gentle way to support your body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins. This is literally the best time to detox. Your liver, kidneys, and digestive system already work to detox your body daily but getting in sync with the natural cycles that we live in only boosts the cleansing power. A seasonal reset helps improve how your body functions and supports overall wellness.

Where Should You Start with a Spring Detox?

Starting a detox can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Begin with small steps:

  • Drink more water throughout the day, add lemon to your morning water first thing to gently wake up your system. Start juicing things like beet, celery, apple and ginger or add cilantro or parsley to up the ante.

  • Add fresh fruits as snacks and lots of fresh vegetables to your meals

  • Stop eating processed and sugary foods. My motto is "nothing that comes in a box" !

  • Get outside and exercise! If you haven't been exercising much lately then start to increase the amount of time you walk or bike and don’t worry about how far you are going - just try to do a little longer each week. Your circulation and lymphatic systems will benefit as well as strengthening your muscles and cleaning out your lungs by breathing more heavily. Exercise is the Miracle pill. More on that later in this article.

  • Get enough rest. Drink a relaxing herbal tea in the evening as a way to slow down and savor the day. Stop using social media from 7pm to 10.00am. get an app that blocks out your usage for this important window of time then restricts social media use to 10 minutes per session. I use an app called "Be Present". You will realize how much better you feel not saturating your self with the Social chaos before you go to bed. If you feel tired, try to listen to your body and find 15 minutes to sit and rest instead of pushing on. Slow down. You’ll be amazed how much more energy you feel after a small rest.

Which Supplements Support a Spring Detox?

Herbal supplements can help support your body during a detox, especially when combined with a healthy lifestyle.

Common detox-support options include:

  • Herbal detox teas and tinctures that include Milk Thistle, dandelion, burdock, black walnut hull, Oregon grape root, cinnamon, clove, pau d'arco. Ask me if you are interested in the detox supplements, I carry or text me what you are using and I’ll give you the thumbs up (or down)

  • Fiber such as psyllium, Chia seed (soaked and used in smoothies, oatmeal or chia pudding) or ground flax seed (put in smoothies or oatmeal) helps to form full complete bowel movements. This healthy bulk brings moisture into the colon, is a prebiotic and regulates the stool so it’s not too hard or too soft. I suggest EITHER 1 teaspoon of psyllium in water, OR 2-4 tablespoons of either chia or ground flax per day. plus, a good number of fresh veggies.

  • Probiotics for gut balance. I suggest people do not overuse probiotics. The reason is that if your diet is healthy, you should already be feeding your current bacteria. However, if you find your bowels are not working quite right then check what you are eating first. Take out the processed, high preservative foods immediately.  Reduce your wheat or dairy and see if that helps. If not, I suggest a pro-bacteria that has soil-based organisms in it as well as the usual selection of probiotics. Garden of Life "Host Defense" is a good probiotic.
