Heavy Metals. Dangers and Detoxification Smoothie

Heavy metals can be an unseen hazard to our organs, cells and tissues. In small amounts they are required for maintaining good health but in larger amounts they can become very toxic or dangerous.

Heavy metal toxicity can lower energy levels and even damage the functioning of the brain, lungs, kidney, liver, blood composition and immune functions. As well as cause severe gastrointestinal disorders, birth defects and even cancer is an example of the complications of heavy metals toxic effects.

Some other signs and symptoms of metal poisoning may include: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration. Heart abnormalities such as cardiomyopathy or abnormal heart beat (dysrhythmia)

The main mechanism of heavy metal toxicity include the generation of free radicals to cause oxidative stress, damage of biological molecules such as enzymes, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Heavy metals can even damage DNA which is key to carcinogenesis as well as neurotoxicty.

Mercury is considered the most toxic heavy metal in the environment. Mercury poisoning is referred to as acrodynia or pink disease.

Do you have mercury fillings?

More than likely you may have been told that they were safe but, studies show that the Mercury “bleeds” out into the mouth and then is dispersed throughout the cells, tissues and organs of your body. Slowly over time your body will be accumulating this heavy metal as it is deeply embedded in your body. It is very difficult for your body to process and eliminate heavy metals by itself. If you have Mercury fillings it may be a wise step to find a reputable dentist that can safely remove and replace your mercury fillings with a less hazardous compound.

My personal heavy metal story (in brief) is this: My father was a 1 packet a day smoker from before I was born. We lived in his second hand smoke in the house and even in the car we were not allowed to open the windows. We did not like it but had no power as kids to change anything. Then, in my 30’s I started to have a “mysterious” sickness which included lack of energy, terrible brain fog, headaches, weight gain, edema, irregular and very painful heavy periods. I felt terrible. I was a very active person and had to give up my jogging and tennis. Nobody seemed to be able to help. Then I read about Heavy Metal toxicity. BOOM! I knew that the smoke contained Cadmium - a heavy metal. I found a practitioner that did Hair Analysis to detect the heavy metals deeply embedded in my body and started on a program of chelation and coffee enemas to release the Cadmium (heavy metal) over a period of about 18 months. Its a slow meticulous process but very well worth it. The process of chelation is that it binds the heavy metal with a drug or substance so it can be released from the body safely in the urine or stool.

I was surprised to find that that mother nature also has a remedy to support heavy metal detoxification! Cilantro!

Other than being one of my most favorite herbs, cilantro is one of the unspoken “warriors” that can help us in so many ways.

Cilantro Health Benefits:

  • rich in phytonutrients, flavonoids and active phenolic acid compounds

  • facilitates heavy metal detoxification

  • stimulates and improves digestion

  • eliminates bad bacteria, like salmonella

  • improves mood

  • fights inflammation and free radicals

  • high in vitamin A and lutein

Cilantro is a must in every garden or window sill and grows easily from seed and can be cut over and over again. Luckily, we can usually buy cilantro anytime of the year at the grocery store. The powerhouse of goodness it contains is brilliant.

This green drink packs a nutritional wallop and is effective for helping move heavy metals out of the body. Make sure you always use organic produce especially when cleansing.

 Vanessa’s favorite:

I love to make cilantro pesto fresh from the garden by replacing the basil with cilantro in your favorite pesto recipe! Its pungent flavor reeks of goodness, it stores well in the fridge and can be used as a dip, spread on warm roasted potatoes or just about anything will be transformed with it! Grow your own cilantro, pick it fresh and use it immediately for a truly great flavorful and healthy experience!
